Inside NYC #4

Posted by Tamara on June 16th, 2008

Our latest New York tipster is Food & Wine magazine’s Jen Murphy, newly turned travel and lifestyle editor. She shared some of her top city secrets with us when we met the other day. Here are her recommendations:

Best Brunch
Prune Restaurant on East 1st Street offers some of the most indulgent brunches in town, as well as 10 varieties of Bloody Mary.

Best Cocktails Employees Only on Hudson street started life as an eaterie catering exclusively to the restaurant trade. Now, the Twenties-inspired hotspot showcases some of the finest mixology in Manhattan

Best Bar Take your pick of The Rusty Knot – a very hip dive bar on the West Side Highway – and Gottino – a newly opened West Village hangout serving the best Italian wines and snacks.

Best store Matter on Park Slope is Brooklyn’s hippest design store, selling everything from furniture to wallpaper and jewellery.

Best market Fight your way past New York’s top chefs to get your hands on foodie treats at Union Square Market, every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

Restaurant Freemans, on Chrystie Street, falls off all but the most in-the-know hipster’s radar. Hidden down a nondescript Lower East Side alleyway, it serves scrumptious trad American cuisine, in an eccentric, taxidermy-heavy environment. It’s also very handy if you’re staying at the Bowery Hotel.
