Inside NYC #5

Posted by Tamara on June 17th, 2008

Just a day before she steps into the newly cobbled shoes of travel editor at hip, irreverent style guide BlackBook (it’s never had one before), we got chatting to Bryce Longton, travel writer, editor and all-round connoisseur of the New York high life. Here are some of her favourite city spots:

Best view Take a cab to the Brooklyn side of the eponymous bridge and wander back towards Manhattan to soak in the views. The morning’s your best bet, as you’ll avoid the crowds. (We did this the day after we met Bryce, and wholeheartedly recommend it).

Best shoes Irregular Choice, on Crosby between Houston and Prince – British designer boots and funky pumps.

Best restaurant La Esquina has been around for a couple of years but it’s still worth the buzz. The ground floor is occupied by a taqueria with a door opening down to the cellar brasserie. Don’t be fooled by the dodgy-looking entrance, the food (spicy Mexican) is as good as it gets.

Best bar Newly reopened, the subMercer (the Mercer Hotel’s clubby cellar bar) has a very exclusive, hip vibe – and is near-impossible to get into.

Best café Café Habana on the corner of Elizabeth and Prince Street is an eco-eaterie serving Cuban and Mexican fare (Bryce likes Mexican, clearly), with a down-to-earth, community vibe.

Best dumplings The seating may be cramped and the service may be brusque but Joe’s Shanghai in Chinatown still serves some of the tastiest dumplings in the Big Apple, including their own improbable invention – the soup dumpling.
