Inside NYC #8
Posted by Tamara on June 20th, 2008Condé Nast Traveller has to be one of the world’s most admired and respected travel magazines, which makes their Word of Mouth editor, Kate Maxwell, one of the most influential people in the business. That’s why we were delighted when Kate – an Englishwoman in New York – slipped her us insider tips on the city’s sweetest sights:
Best bar PDT (212) 614 0386) on St Marks Place (between 1st Avenue and Avenue A) is incongruously situated in the cellar beneath a hot dog kiosk – and you only get in if you call down from a phone booth stand. Small, dark, intimate, and ‘stuffed’ with taxidermy, PDT – short for ‘Please Don’t Tell’ (Kate’s sorry, she told) – is reservations-only.
Best restaurant Former Ramsay chef Neil Ferguson has turned his Michelin-honed skills to the meat-heavy menu at Allen and Delancey , a Modern American restaurant at the junction of – you guessed it – Allen and Delancey.
Best brunch Truffle-egg toast at the Italian eatery ‘Intoteca on Rivington Street.
Best club The Box, a late-night cabaret club hidden on Chrystie Street, with shows ranging from the mainstream to the avant-garde – expect the unexpected. Definitely one for burlesque fans.
