When it comes to reporting on cutting-edge arts, culture and design, New-York based Coolhunting is on the vanguard. And few hotels are more worthy of being celebrated on this finger-on-the-pulse website than Thierry Teyssier’s Romaneira. At Smith we always appreciate great-looking hotels, and there’s nothing we love more than sharing our experiences at fabulous hideaways, but it’s always great to get the opportunity to have a closer look at exceptional design and sing the praises of the brains behind such remarkable hotel beauty.

Here’s the piece I recently wrote for Coolhunting on Teyssier’s magnificent Douro Valley property:

When it comes to hip hoteliers, Thierry Teyssier, the creator of Quinta dos Sonhos (Romaneira’s Portuguese name) is a true visionary. He has considered every colour, visualized every view, procurRomaneira-Boutique-Hoteled the highest spec fixtures and then sprinkled this 13-roomed hotel and this working wine estate with imaginative artworks.

It’s nothing new for hotels to gush that each bedroom is individually decorated; usually this is tantamount to uniform drapes in the same patterned fabric, just in purple/pink instead of green/blue. Refreshingly absent of even a whiff of corporate influence, at Romaneira, the furnishings in every idiosyncratic enclave have clearly been cherry-picked from around the globe. Indeed, Teyssier’s passion for traveling meant that his search for special pieces for the hotel actually started years ago during visits to India, China and Africa.

Just try and find another working Portuguese wine estate quite as high on ‘ooh la la’ as Romaneira.
