Look out Barcelona, here we come… again

Posted by Mary Garvin on November 24th, 2008

As one part of the two-man band that is Mr & Mrs Smith’s Hotel Collections Team, it’s my job to make sureGrand Hotel Central, Barcelona boutique hotel that we uncover the Smithiest gems a city has to offer, even if we’ve been there before, and even if we already feature the finest. First and foremost, this means my agenda is filled with beautiful boutique hotels in Barcelona, such as Hotel Omm, Prestige Paseo de Gracia, Grand Hotel Central, Hotel Neri and, soon to feature in the Smith collection, Hotel Murmuri.

But nearest and dearest to my hungry heart is food and drink, wining and dining, gorging and gulping. As the co-founder of Spy HQ’s highly over-subscribed, exclusive, by-invitation-only, Lunch Club (more about that some other time), you’ll find that I’ve got food on the brain. All. The. Time.

So… hook a sister up! I’m interested in insider tip-offs to check out this week so that we can update our current Barcelona destination guide. If you know of a hotel restaurant, an out-of-the-way tapas joint, or a fab bar that I just have to sink a cocktail in, please let me know. Of course, in true Smith-style, each suggestion will need to be tested in person. All that tapas, so little time. It’s a tough job but somebody’s got to do it…

  1. Barcelona is one of the European destinations left on my travel wish list.

  2. There’s a great bar called La Fira that’s in a warehouse full of old carnival equipment. The atmosphere is a little spooky, but also REALLY fun.

Erica’s tip about the Lika Lounge is a good one too.

  3. Biblioteca is a fantastic little restaurant in town serving very good local food – and the service is spot on.

For a posher eat try L’Orangerie at the Gran Hotel La Florida at the top of Tibidabo. 5 star food and amazing views, with a gorgeous terrace bar for after dinner drinks.

  4. Will most definitely be heading back to Barcelona for fun and sun sometime soon and will be sure to check out all of your suggestions – thanks!

My two favourite dining experiences of the trip were both casual tapas style places. You can’t go wrong sitting at the bar at Cal Pep – the best calamari I’ve ever had (lightly fried with a dusting of batter and a generous sprinkling of sea salt) went down a treat with a bottle of crisp, cold Albarinho.

And on our last night, we made the waiter palpably nervous with the copious amounts of food ordered by our table of three at Cervesaria Catalana. Note to self… be cool and order a few dishes, followed by a few more, and a few more like the locals next time rather than my over-excited, panicky hunger induced mass ordering which goes something like this “oh-my-god-i’m-starving! We’ll have one of those, and those, and those, no two of those, and one of those. Oh and one of these. Please. Gracias. Oh wait, we forgot the boquerones! Waiter!”
