i was just in Marrakech….i must say, the souks were a site to be seen, but most of the over produced goods (slippers, hastetly made dishes, cheap jewelry) i had no interest in. that being said, i did find some antiques that i made out with! and the haggaling was actually quite fun, i got what i wanted for what i wanted and the shop owner was happy. i found that if i don’t buy something from a shop owner, they called me nazi, spit towards me or waved their hand in front of the face (sign that i am crazy). i would have to disagree and say the people are NOT friendly or nice. i have been to over 30 countries, they were deffinately mean here. Hong Kong mean.

Oooh, next time take a trip (2.5 hours by car from Marrakech, fractionally longer from Agadir) to gorgeous Essaouira on the Atlantic coast, world heritage site and casually chic French/Arab beach destination. Jimi Hendrix is said to have ‘discovered’ it in the 60s. Its cute, all blue and white, with cobbled street, great cafés and restaurants, fab kite surfing too and its temperature is 16 to 28 degrees ALL YEAR ROUND! A combination holiday with three days in Marrakech and three or four days in Essaouira and possibly a night in the Atlas mountains too offers the best of all worlds!

Any chance to see / meet Maryam of “My Marrakech” during your visit?

I was in Marrakech in April and the image that sticks out most to me is definitely all of the action going on in the streets. Bikers, motor-bikers, donkeys, cars, taxis, people walking.. it truly was an amazing sight.

I have some friends who have just returned from Marrakech raving about Anayela - a mythical Riad in the north of the Medina. Seems its a real fairytale place and run by a very charasmatic couple:

I’m green with envy with all this talk of Marrakech! It all sounds simply stunning and is definitely on my must-see and must-shop list (oh, to be haggling in a souk right about now).
