Has anyone been to Crusoes on Tynemouth beach? The beach itself is such a find being so near to Newcastle city centre but Crusoes is fantastic. Open in the morning for coffee and bacon buns and stays open right through till the night where it becomes a bistro.

Just spent a gloriously sunny weekend in Broadstairs and happy to report that Oscar Road Café still as great as ever - a kiwi victoria sponge and Kentish cheese plate with cheese scones sorted me right out after a long walk to Ramsgate and back - might even have to do a blog post so I can share a pic of the bucket of prawns my friends had as it was so tasty and so.. pretty! We also went into a sugar-induced retail frenzy and bought some vintage-style tea trays, local jams and fudge to bring back to London. Happy days!

@Erica - I guess it would depend where you were based/how much time you had/what type of experience you were looking for. The Cornish coast's pretty hard to beat for sheer drama and natural beauty; Dorset's Jurassic coast has prehistoric fossil finds to keep you interested; Kent and Sussex offer Best of British seaside fun and are a bit easier to get to if you're staying in London :-)

"Victoria sponge cakes, fat wedges of fudge brownie, and darling cup cakes" at Oscar Road Café. Mmmmm... Exactly my taste.

I wonder what British coastal town is best for a first time visitor.

Mmmmm. I have a sudden fish-and-chip craving... extra salt and vinegar. If only I could bring the Mexican weather home with me!

This post has also just reminded me of my oh-so-joyous trip to Porthminster Cafe last Summer, where I had lunch with my family and everyone of us had absolutely delicious food - the squid was a particular favourite. Porthminster Cafe is a great example of the wealth of great beach cafes popping up all over Cornwall which offer delicious menus of fresh seafood and beautiful views out to sea. The Beach Restaurant at Sennen Beach is another one with great food - much needed after our first surfing lesson!
