Postcard from Hong Kong: cable cars, spas and floating bars
Posted by Lucy on February 6th, 2009Roving Smith stylista Toni Jones sends Mr & Mrs Smith a postcard from exotic Hong Kong…
As one of the newest recruits to the Smith blogging team, I felt it was my duty to jet off somewhere glamorous pronto. So… a slightly belated Kung Hei Fat Choi (Happy New Year) from Hong Kong! I’m taking a quick breather from this hectic city back at our peaceful mini suite at the Jia hotel in Causeway Bay.
Staying at this Philippe Starck-designed skinny skyrise feels like hanging out at the Sanderson’s much cooler little sister: it’s all graceful furniture and white curtains, with eccentric touches like DIY breakfasts and bar guides in your room.
Not that we’ve spent much time here: in the past 24 hours, we’ve explored the city by foot, taxi, subway, boat and cable car. We’ve sampled dim sum at the top of the Peak, mixed with Prada-clad bankers at hot spot Sevva and ambled through weird and wonderful markets selling everything from bird’s nests to knock-off Bottega Veneta.
And we found heaven in the form of a £10 foot rub at some non-descript spa in Kowloon (you’ll recognise this classy establishment by its neon ‘No Sex Service’ sign).
If you get chance to visit soon, you’ve got to jump aboard the glamorous Aqualuna junk boat, to watch the neon skyline come to life
with a cold beer and cool for company.

I have always given Hong Kong a miss as being too commercialised, however this makes it seem much more fun !
