Capital cool: top 10 fashion tips from London stylist Johnny Blue Eyes

Johnny at the House of Blue Eyes launch showAs London Fashion Week gets into full swing this weekend, art-performance-fashion collective House of Blue Eyes’ idiosyncratic creative director Johnny Blue Eyes gives roving Smith stylista Toni Jones his top 10 quirky style tips for the upcoming season. Read Toni’s interview with Johnny Blue Eyes, posted yesterday, for a bit of background on London‘s most unconventional of fashionistas.

Buy the biggest pair of knickers you can find and wear them over your opaque tights, Lady GaGa style.

(Toni’s top shopping tip: order yer big bloomers online from Figleaves)

Knitwear is big for 2009 so when visiting your grandparents… have tea, eat cake and then quietly steal all their knitting patterns.

Cupcake hats, jet black mourning jewellery, Victorian momento mori broaches; anything a bit Gothic romance with glass eyeballs and crow feathers looks good right now.

Keep up with the lace trend throughout the credit crunch: gather your friends and invest in a lacy body stocking between you. A few hours on a sunbed will have you bang on trend for the whole season.

Mix and match high street and designer: whether it’s high street or high end, Nando’s or Nobu – variety is the spice of life.

Scrape your hair up tight, do smoky tarantula eyes, beige lipstick, cream tights, slingbacks, pencil skirt, chandelier earrings, carrier bag, favourite badge. A little charm and a lot of style is all you need.

Wear hats: hit the nail on the head with colour, colour and more colour.

Use bold statement jewellery to accessorise your whole look from head to killer heels.

(Toni’s top shopping tip: source yours at The Earring Boutique)

Kurt Geiger stilettosTIP 9
Work a heel
come rain, snow or shine.

(Toni’s top shopping tip: Kurt Geiger is the place to go for the hottest heels)

TIP 10
Jewellery and accessories are all high glamour! Take inspiration from Joan Collins, preferably as Alexis Carrington. Try to avoid catfights with arch-rivals, however!

As well as wordsmithing online, in print, in the press and for Smith TV, Lucy Fennings has been a driving force in making the Smith Travel Blog an award-winner. Mr & Mrs Smith's Group Editor cut her travel teeth early; as daughter of a hotel PR, she visited far-flung flophouses from French châteaux to Ethiopian tukuls. After a year in Dubai (working on Emirates Woman magazine and enjoying the kind of dives that require a wetsuit), Lucy went to Glasgow University to study art, literature and whisky. A stint as production editor at Legalease publishing was spent discovering how to be creative with copy about tax, followed quickly by a stint discovering more interesting things across south-east Asia. When Mr & Mrs Smith found her, Lucy was at Harper’s Bazaar, keeping her finger on fashion’s pulse and sharpening her editorial knife on hapless hotel PR copy.

I’ve never been a big fan of hats (particularly not on myself), but you can’t go wrong with bold statement jewellery and Kurt Geiger heels.
