Hotel of the Week: The 1770 House
Posted by Caroline on February 26th, 2010We’re heading over to the heavenly Hamptons this week to decisively declare the picket-fenced and prim 1770 House in East Hampton our favourite hotel (for the next seven days at least)…
Why this week? Mr & Mrs Smith members should move fast (before 1 April at any rate) for a free night if they stay for three.
Our favourite bits The intimate, all-American restaurant at the 1770 is a best-of-both mix of hotel and homely. Dine on the terrace, then walk off your iced oysters and New York strip steak among the fairy lights and flowers in the garden. Historic speakeasy, the Tavern, is a small, dimly lit bar in the basement with bench seating, stained glass windows and exposed brickwork. We love the private porch entrance of romantic Room Six, its softly patterned fawn wallpaper and the coral-blossomed curtains. The cosy library in the main house has fireside sofas, perfect to have a glass of wine beside.
Mr & Mrs Smith say ‘This grand, clapboarded property has been hosting the well heeled since 1770. Its picket fence, evergreen lawns
and pert shrubbery make it look like it’s been airlifted from the set of Desperate Housewives. Inside, the relaxed styling is more Susan than Bree. Climbing the carpeted staircase, past the tome-lined library/living room, discover its six individually styled rooms, decorated with pastel, patterned wallpaper, button-back headboards and furnishings heavy with swags and pleats. It’s only the Frette linens, flatscreen TVs and miniature Molton Brown bottles that remind you you haven’t moved to Wisteria Lane, after all, but checked in to one of the Hamptons’ most luxury-laden boutique inns…’
