Bank holiday blues? Don’t forget Paris

Posted by Anthony Leyton on August 21st, 2010

The August bank holiday (sorry non-UK readers, you may look away now) creeps up on you sometimes, suddenly popping onto the horizon the week before it strikes, and reminding you that it’s the last bona fide long-weekend opportunity before Christmas. Not got a getaway arranged yet? Oh well, never mind, you’ll never find anywhere with availability now; may as well give up.

Not really. Just joshing with you there.

We’ve been keeping an eye on which hotels still have rooms free next weekend, and can safely report that there are still a plenty of last-minute options out there. We’ve also got a travel-insider secret to share: on August bank holidays, make a beeline for Paris.

Yes, yes, I know we’ve been going on about France for a while now (how can we not, when our tres, tres belle new France hotel guide is sat somewhere in a bookshop near you, winking coquettishly, right this moment?), but with an array of enticing Parisians available (some of which are offering free nights to Smith members on August’s final weekend), permittez-nous another Gallic blogdulgence.

If you haven’t booked your break yet, all of the following Paris hotels still have availability (at time of typing, of course).

  2. Excellent article with nice pictures. I can strongly recommend hotel Le Bellechasse and Hotel Le Notre Dame, both having a decoration that you won’t find anywhere else. Le Notre Dame has an awesome view of the Cathedral and I think if you love Paris as I do you have to sleep there at least once in your lifetime. I remember vividly the first view of the Cathedral I got from the lounge/breakfast room windows right after checking in at the reception; that was just breath-taking. I felt like going back to the middle age time or being part of a movie scene. I can also recommend hotel La Maison Champs Elysees where I have slept some weeks ago; hotel is just next to Grand Palais in the area of Champs Elysees; formerly Sofitel the hotel has changed brand and for the better. Hotel has a gorgeous inner garden. Room was really spacious for parisian standards and service is top.

  3. Great, article – awesome photos! I’ve seen many of these hotels and they are pretty WOW. BTW there is a new hotel by Jacques Garcia opening in a few days that is just 100% boutique hotel!
