Carnival comes to the Caribbean
Posted by Anthony on August 4th, 2010
As though the ice-white beaches and sparkly seas weren’t enough to tempt us to the Caribbean, in August there’s an added incentive: Carnival season in Grenada starts tomorrow…
When 5–10 August.
Where Grenada National Stadium, and island-wide.
What happens Loud, colourful, and exciting, this island-wide jump-up is a showcase of kaleidoscopic costumes and licentious dance moves – all washed down with lashings of rum, naturally. Carnival (aka Spice Mas) highlights include the National Queen beauty pageant on the fifth, as well as calypso, soca and steelband concerts and competitions. On the ninth is J’Ouvert, an unmissable day of parades, dances and exuberant Mas bands.
Where to stay With its dark-wood decks and Asian-influenced furniture, and a soothing colour palette of mottled ochres and muddy blues, Laluna ticks all the right style boxes. Its 16 pool-equipped Balinese cottages all have big, floaty four-posters every bit as enticing as the clear turquoise waters of the Caribbean, and there’s a spa, yoga centre, and an authentic Italian restaurant. Best of all, Laluna is offering Smith members 50 per cent off stays until the end of November. Check out our half-price hotel offers to find out how to book.
Also For an insight into the island’s rum-making history, not to mention a particularly potent post-carnival hair of the dog, visit the River Antoine Estate, at the north end of the island, home to the oldest working water-propelled distillery in the Caribbean.
