Postcard from New York: rooting for the Fat Radish – a Modern Brit in the Big Apple
Posted by Juliet on November 29th, 2010
Congrats to Brits abroad, Ben Towill and Phil Winser (below), the oh-so-creative team behind The Fat Radish on the Lower East Side, just round the corner from Hotel on Rivington in New York. When I was in town recently interviewing for an editor to join our team at our new office on Broadway (we look forward to introducing you to her soon!), I was lucky enough to be staying down the road from an exciting venture from some other enterprising Englishfolk.
Ben is the foodiest of the two fellows, and having come to New York at the tender age of 22, he already had a little experience of working with Raymond Blanc and Rick Stein under his belt. They launched their catering company, Silkstone, in October 2008, and now their seasonal Modern British cooking is creating a storm at their new restaurant in a former Chinatown sausage factory on Orchard Street.
The menu changes regularly at Fat Radish and is pretty unpredictable (bar seasonality, of course) – but some favourites for us included Brown Rice Kedgeree; Heirloom Carrots with Crispy Kale and Hijiki Seaweed; a delicious creamy Celery Root Pot Pie; and oysters and ceviche of some tasty white fish… And did we mention the cocktails were tasty, too? (Check out the mini menu, right).
Their inspired dishes have won them plaudits not just for the imaginative flavours but the fact that the chaps go to great lengths to source the finest seasonal and heritage produce from specialist local farms. This emphasis on farm-to-table practices and local sourcing is actually incredibly unique within the NY restaurant scene. Then when I bumped into photographer Tom Mendes at Soho House New York, and he very kindly said he’d share a couple of snaps, how could I not share with the group? Bon appetit…
