Win $100 hotel voucher, build a village in India

No, not a Would you rather? question, but a genuine offer.

For the third year running, Mr & Mrs Smith is getting into bed with some of the world’s finest travel bloggers (now there’s an image) in recognition of Passports with Purpose – a worldwide blog initiative intended to raise money for noble causes.

The philanthropic brainchild of Delicious Baby, Nerd’s Eye View, WanderMom, and Wanderlust and Lipstick, Passports with Purpose raised $7,500 in 2008 to fight poverty for Heifer international, and, last year, netted $30,000 – enough to build a school in Cambodia.

This year, the sights are set even higher. The PWP crew is planning to amass $50,000 to enable community-land charity Lafti to build a village in India. Yes, you read that right: an entire village. And we’re doing our own small bit to help, by donating a prize – a $100 hotel gift card.

How it works

Just pop over to www.passportswithpurpose.com, and, for every $10 you donate, you’ll get a chance to win your choice of the spectacular prizes on offer. A bit like a raffle, except you get to choose what prize you win in advance, so there’s no danger of walking out with a box of Milk Tray and a voucher for a Japanese rope bondage lesson (unless you want to, of course).

The prizes

Smith’s $100 Get a Room! gift card can be used towards a stay at any of the 750+ boutique hotels and self-catering properties in our worldwide collection. And for a $10 donation, that ain’t bad at all. The other prizes up for grabs include hotel stays, Xboxes, travel gear, shopping vouchers, luggage and, er, a ukelele. So, if you want to win yourself a gift card, or any of the other enticements on offer, or even if you just want to help build a home for people who need one, please donate now.

Before joining Mr & Mrs Smith, managing editor Anthony Leyton was at The Independent, writing about universities for the Push Guides. As you can imagine, it was a tough task persuading him to exchange league tables for luxury holiday retreats and halls of residence for hip hotels. Anthony has penned pieces for publications both top-drawer (The Telegraph) and top-shelf (Fiesta), and he has had a love of travel ever since he found bullet holes in the walls of a hotel room in New Orleans. He also has too many pets. But that's another tale altogether.
