New year, new hotels: welcome to 2011

Posted by Caroline on January 11th, 2011

The festivities may be over and it’s a long old slog to spring, but here’s something to get excited about: we’ve a host of new boutique beauties debuting at Smith this January…

In Morocco, we made our first foray into Fez and found Palais Amani, a citrus-scented restored riad within the ancient city walls.

We also headed to Amsterdam and picked out Inn on the Lake, a revamped waterside vicarage just outside the city, and The Toren (above), a boudoir-meets-bordello bolthole right on the King’s Canal.

On UK soil, 15 Glasgow, a parkside B&B in Scotland’s second city, caught our eye, as did Coworth Park, a stately Georgian manor in Berkshire, with its own polo field and spa. In Oxfordshire, we fell for Hope House, a fabled family home that’s opened its arms to guests, and we also liked the look of Archangel, a mediaeval and modern retreat with a cosy cocktail bar in Somerset.

We bolstered our Argentina collection with new finds in the awe-inspiring Andes: Finca Valentina, a charming country house in colonial Salta, and Rio Hermoso (above), a lakeside lodge in Patagonia’s San Martin de los Andes.

Phew, that’s all for this month. No rest for the wicked, though. We’re off to – deep breath – Cheltenham, Sussex, Luxembourg, the Amalfi Coast, Montana, Puglia and Rotterdam. See you in February…

  1. Wow thats so cool – we did a 3 month summer tour of Argentina and actually stayed at this very same lodge – the Rio Hermoso. It was pretty expensive compared to what we were used to in Argentina, but for 2 nights – it was well and truly worth it. Loved this place, hope to get back there again one day.
