The post-wedding blues are rife at Smith HQ, but there’s still one more reason to celebrate: a whole host of new hotels for May. Don’t go packing those flags away just yet…
First up, we forayed into Portugal, combing the coast north to south in search of hotel-shaped hot cakes. Torres Vedras, north of Lisbon, brought us Areias do Seixo, a back-to-nature bolthole on the beach. In Alentejo, we couldn’t resist the charms of Herdade da Malhadhina Nova, nor its working winery, sumptuous spa and Michelin-starred chef. We also took a detour to the home of port, calling in at Hotel Teatro, a stage-worthy show-stopper in Porto.
Over on American shores, we visited maritime Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay, finding a bed for the night at Inn at Perry Cabin, a clapboard colonial darling in St Michaels. The Villa by Barton G, Versace’s former mansion where more is most certainly more, caught our eyes when we hit Miami, as did The Betsy, a classic colonial hideaway in the South Beach deco district.
We also came over all Robinson Crusoe, casting ourselves away on a desert island just off the coast of Mozambique. Only this time, no luxuries had to be forsaken: Azura’s villas have all bases covered, with private pools, discreet butler service and simply spectacular views of Benguerra Island.
