Sydney art scene… cool crafts at the Powerhouse Museum
Posted by Sarah L on July 31st, 2011Crafty Smiths in Sydney should pop along to the Powerhouse Museum this weekend for the launch of Love Lace (30 July 2011–April 2012), a quirky 130-strong exhibition of lace-inspired artworks, with nary a doily or wedding dress in sight (well, maybe just one or two). Curator Lindie Ward has stretched the definition of lace to include any ‘openwork structure whose pattern of spaces is as important as the solid areas,’ so this cutting-edge collection spans covetable jewellery and haute frocks, along with body parts knitted from human hair and a full-size rusty truck that’s been hand-carved into prettiness. Here’s a lil’ taster of what to expect…

Tribe (2011) (sculpture) by Kim Lieberman, South Africa, 2010, red silk bobbin lace, cast bronze and found objects. Photo: Wayne Oosthuizen.
Lacie Lorrie by Ingrid Morley, Sydney, Australia, 2010, plasma and die-grinder-cut truck body. Photo: Powerhouse Museum.
Winning entry Detroit’s Shadow (sculpture) by Anne Mondro, USA, 2010, thin steel wire crochet.
If you’re visiting Sydney, check into Establishment Hotel, just a hop, skip and a jump from the Powerhouse Museum.
