In the diary: The Wild Duck at Melbourne’s Malthouse Theatre
Posted by Sarah L on February 16th, 2012If you’re planning your diary and looking for things to do in Melbourne, take a peek at the Malthouse Theatre’s sensational season opener, The Wild Duck. Running from 17 February to 17 March, this cutting-edge play has picked up a slew of awards, including three Helpmanns and four Sydney Theatre Awards (that’s serious stuff down under).
Wunderkind director Simon Stone has transformed Henrik Ibsen’s 1884 tale of truth into a modern-day marvel, offering a ‘bittersweet portrait of family dysfunction, deception and denial’ (oh so 2012).
Starring Toby Schmitz, Eloise Mignon, Ewen Leslie and Anita Hegh (pictured left to right), The Wild Duck is a stripped-back, taut production that asks the question, are there some truths it’s better not to know?
Housed in a historic brewery, on Sturt Street in Southbank, Malthouse Theatre is known for its contemporary performances. Before taking in the 7.30pm show, grab a drink or dinner at the buzzy bar, or kickstart your evening in the Champagne Bar at the art-filled Lyall Hotel and Spa, a Melbourne boutique hotel in nearby South Yarra.
