New for August: Smith hotels in Spain, Croatia, Italy, the US, Greece, London, Bali and beyond

This month, we discovered Casona de Quintana, a secluded Basque Country hideaway; Palazzo Victoria, a mediaeval-meets-modern palace in Verona; and Domaine des Andéols, a Provençal hillside hamlet. Then, New Hotel – a modernist designer den in Athens – caught our eye, as did Hotel Vestibul Palace, in a World Heritage Site in Split.

In Ireland, we explored Liss Ard Estate, a stately modern manor in verdant County Cork. Then, over in London, we added elegant townhouse Dorset Square Hotel and classic grande dame Claridge’s to our hand-picked hotel collection.

In the United States, we stayed at The Dupont Circle Hotel (one of the best addresses in Washington, DC) then headed out west to the Inn of the Five Graces and Los Poblanos in New Mexico, as well as The Saguaro, a hip Scottsdale hotspot.

In Asia this month, we were Bali-bound: we lounged at the luxurious L Hotel Seminyak before retreating to the super-stylish Oazia Spa Villas and tropical bolthole Villa Mathis in coastal Canggu. Finally, in Thailand, sleek skyscraper Oriental Residence and art deco river-front beauty The Siam won us over in Bangkok.

After a decade of holidaying in lacklustre English country cottages, Mr & Mrs Smith Sub-editor Rachel Juarez-Carr's parents went wild in the early Nineties and whisked the family off to Norway; it was while sailing the fjords on a Ukrainian cruise ship that their 11-year-old daughter decided she loved travel. Once she completed her journalism degree at the University of Westminster, Rachel ran off to Los Angeles and crisscrossed the US for the next seven years, writing for two travel magazines and photographing everyone and everything. She’s now back in London, happy to be back shooting under grey skies and thrilled to be working with Smith's editorial team.
