XV Beacon, Boston: hotel of the week

Posted by Sarah Jappy on August 24th, 2012

The first Monday in September cometh. For UK Smiths that means not much more than the return of the school year, but for our far-flung friends across the pond it’s something more exciting: Labor Day! Like most national holidays, this means a well-balanced mix of rest and party. Where better to do that than at our hotel of the week: the swanky XV Beacon in Boston.

Style Stately city stay
Setting Beside beautiful Boston Common

Why this week? Nothing says ‘let’s celebrate the economic and social contributions of workers’ quite like a bottle of $17,000 1876 Château d’Yquem from the hotel’s jaw-dropping wine list. Sound a bit extravagant? Panic not: we’ve found a deal everyone will love. How about 15 per cent off three-night stays plus a guaranteed upgrade? Oh, and they’ll throw in a (slightly more modest) bottle of wine, too.

Our favourite bits This inimitable city escape will give you art deco decor, super service and more sweet satisfaction than a heaping slice of Boston cream pie. While you’re there soak in the rooftop hot tub and try some of the city’s finest steak at Mooo. If you’re looking for the best pairing for that meat, book a private dinner in the Wine Cellar, which dates back to 1722 and houses vintage tipples that stretch back as far as the 1700s.

Mr & Mrs Smith say… ‘I’m too full of cupcakes and lobster rolls from my day of wandering Boston’s streets to even think about dinner, but I figure that, as I’m on a break, I should treat myself to a glass of champagne in Mooo before disappearing into my room. Sitting quietly at the same discreet table that the lovely waitstaff gave me yesterday, I savour the sensation of bubbles fizzing against my tongue and realise I haven’t given that much thought to poor Mr Smith, the sick man of Europe, all day long. Who can blame me? XV Beacon, it turns out, has been the perfect weekend partner – stylish, charismatic and ridiculously good-looking – but, hey, all good things have to come to an end. I resolve to head upstairs and call Mr Smith. Once I’ve had another glass of Veuve Clicquot, that is…’

You say… ‘We would thoroughly recommend this hotel to anyone planning to visit Boston. We loved the decor, the beds, the staff were very helpful and made us feel welcome from the minute we stepped in the foyer. Having a private vehicle to taxi us to various spots was an added bonus that we had not realised when booking. Small touches like fresh fruit on hand were also appreciated. The restaurant at the hotel is wonderful, and we made it there most days if not to eat to have a pre-dinner drink. The hotel is right in the middle of the historic district and makes it very easy to access all the points of interest in Boston. Loved Boston… Loved this hotel. Wouldn’t go anywhere else if we find ourselves back in this great city.’
