Why this week? Weather-wise, this is the perfect time to visit: South Africa’s sizzling summer is only just beginning. Hawksmoor House also has a special offer for Smith members: stay three nights, pay for two…

Our favourite bits This unique guesthouse stay allows you a nostalgic glimpse into South Africa’s vintage winelands world: lingering breakfasts on the verandah, vineyard walks, sundowners on the stoop and indulgent dinners in an 18th-century dining room. When it comes to sleeping arrangements, we love the bright and airy White Room, a small suite in the main house with an extra single bedroom, a dressing room, a private terrace and a bathroom with a huge oval bath tub. Don’t forget your camera – the sunsets are spectacular, and you’re sharing the farm with some interesting feathered friends.

Mr & Mrs Smith say ‘The abundance of dark oil paintings and dramatic arrangements of fresh flowers steals our breath and we haven’t yet seen our own quarters. Wooden floors, ancient beamed ceilings and tiny original window panes continue the hit of history. Our bedroom, the green suite, is enormous and it feels like our own empire thanks to a nearby sitting room. Here the lounge’s charm doesn’t just emanate from a décor steeped in olden-day glories. Winking its eye at us is an enormous drinks cabinet with home-grown white, Hawksmoor House hotel in South Africarosé and red wines begging our attention in return for a scribble of our name on the honesty chit, and a humble payment of 75 rand.’ Read the full anonymous review of Hawksmoor House in the Garden Route & Winelands…

You say My wife and I – and our nine-month-old son – enjoyed four fantastic nights at Hawksmoor House. It’s a charming place and very relaxing. The main house, including the bedrooms, is beautifully decorated. The gardens and pool are well maintained. The food – breakfast and supper – is simple yet delicious. Hawksmoor’s own wine is great value. We found the location very convenient for both the winelands and central Cape Town. Above all though, it’s the staff who make the whole experience truly memorable. They were all incredibly friendly, efficient and always willing to help out with looking after the baby. They really couldn’t have done more to help us enjoy a wonderful stay. Thank you for a great holiday. (James, SilverSmith, stayed on 17 Feb 2012)

Weeks before first joining Mr & Mrs Smith's editorial team as assistant editor, Sarah Jappy was interviewing hot blondes in Copenhagen for a virginmedia.com city guide. Having penned food porn for Blue Tomato and fashion features at Itchy City Guides, Sarah was delighted to bring an appetite for alliteration and expert opinion on hot topics including: the marzipan to pastry ratio of the perfect almond croissant; which shop-bought hollandaise sauce generates the best eggs benedict and where to source the capital’s most drool-worthy moules marinière. That's not to even mention her 12 years of Irish dancing prowess. She has now moved Down Under to head up Smith's Melbourne editorial team.
