Samling, the Lake District: hotel of the week

Posted by Sarah Jappy on November 23rd, 2012

This week, we’re lusting after a lakeside stay with an excellent restaurant and rooms with watery prospects. Step forward Samling: a Lake District hideaway with crackling fires and a cracking menu – the hotel was even named ‘World’s Best for Dining’ at the recent Boutique Hotel Awards.

Style A very English retreat
Setting Lakeside wilderness

Our favourite bits We’ve already raved about the restaurant but the location is pretty special too: nestled in soft undulating hills and perfect woods rolling down to Lake Windermere is the Samling hotel. You couldn’t ask for a more ideal perch: right on the water, but still secluded. The beauty of the woodland location is that you can step outside your room and just start walking…

Why this week? It seems like a great time to try out the restaurant. There are also currently two Samling hotel offers to choose from: up to 15 per cent off a two-night dinner package, or 25 per cent off dinner, bed and breakfast.

Samling hotel, Lake DistrictMr & Mrs Smith say… ‘‘We’d booked into Lethera, our own three-storey cottage. At the bottom was a huge bathroom, stocked with candles and goodies; it left a lot to the imagination – in a good way. Next floor up was our chill-out room. A comfy worn-in sofa, telly, sound system and realistic-looking gas fire made it as cosy as can be. But, better than all the mod cons that money can buy, we were astonished by the most incredible view of the lake. At the top was a bed with big fluffy pillows, and, even more fantastic, another chance to get a load of that vista.’

You say… ‘A beautiful cottage, huge fluffy bathrobes, the most comfy bed, amazing views and a hot tub all to ourselves. Spot-on service plus a feeling of calm and peace – what more do city dwellers need? Dinner was absolutely marvellous: mutton with the most superbly deep flavour, a surprising fennel sherbet and a honeycomb called Yellow Man that we wanted more of. And well done on the curated wine list; it’s not often you find a Meerlust in the UK – 10 out of 10 for everything. And a huge thank you to the staff for the fantastic start to our first anniversary weekend. Really a beautiful place to stay.’

  1. The room looks bright and comfortable. From your description and the pictures, it looks like a good bet for a second honeymoon.
