Sun, sea, spa, repeat: five top coastal retreats

Posted by Laura House on February 12th, 2013

Time away is precious, and we can’t help but want to fit it all in – spa treatments and surfing trips, premium pampering and paddle-boarding. So we’ve picked out shore-side spots for surf, spa and sun that strike the right balance between action-adventure and soul-soothing. And, for our North and South America Smiths in search of quality R ‘n’ R, book five or more nights at any of our hand-picked winter sun hotels before 8 March and you’ll get a  free Kindle or Malin + Goetz pampering kit with your dose of sunshine.

Goldeneye Hotel & Resort, JamaicaGOLDENEYE HOTEL & RESORT Jamaica
Style From Jamaica with love
Setting Banyans and beaches

This idyllic cluster of whitewashed cottages and suites on Jamaica’s Oracabessa Bay is indeed named after the Brosnan Bond vehicle. But this is no gimmick either: Ian Fleming penned all 14 of his James Bond novels in his villa, now the hotel’s centrepiece. Stage your own action in the dedicated watersports area, reward your physical stunts at the  swim-up hillside spa and cue the romantic scenes in the treetop restaurant.

Casa Morada hotel Florida KeysCASA MORADA Florida Keys
Style Minimalist bayside beauty
Setting Palm-shaded strip of Islamorada

An adults-only island retreat sits serene in a pocket of lush tropicalia. Picture poolside palms hung with hammocks, Floridian fauna, and the balmy Gulf of Mexico just a saunter from your suite. Cap a scenic scuba excursion in the marine-life-rich reef  with a relaxing massage on your private terrace.

Oceana Santa Barbara Hotel, Santa Barbara

OCEANA SANTA BARBARA
California
Style
 Bold, bright and beautiful
Setting Sun-kissed California coast

Pack your board shorts and bikinis for this surfer-chic hotel
with colourful rooms, two beautiful pools and palm-shaded, bougainvillea-wrapped courtyard.  Hop on a bike and explore the wharf, head out for a surf lesson on that famous coastline and end the day with a bottle of wine on the patio for a front-row sunset seat.

THE MODERN HONOLULU HawaiiThe Modern Honolulu Hotel, Honolulu
Style
 A bit of all white
Setting Buzzy Waikiki Beach

Surf’s up at this master of Hawaiian hipness with the most in-demand restaurant in town, four bars, and see-and-be-seen nightclub. Stroll the tropical gardens, take a plunge in one of  two pools, and say Mahalo to ancient Polynesian pampering treatments at the sublime spa.

CASA BONITA HOTEL Dominican Republic Casa Bonita Hotel, Dominican Republic
Style
 Eco elegance
Setting Rugged Barahona rainforest

Grab your board (or one of the hotel’s) and head down to one of the local-surfer-secret beaches or hop onto a horse for a ride through the hotel’s own patch of jungle. Soak in the views from your balcony, or let the bartender bring you another cocktail at your poolside chaise lounge. Just follow your fancy, because, with only 12 casitas, Casa Bonita on the untouched southern coast of
the Dominican Republic, might as well be your own private estate.
