This week, we’re playing it cool. Not only is the weather pleasantly temperate after a hot desert summer, but, between its ever-innovative restaurants, career-launching music scene and iconic South by Southwest festivals, quirky and independent Austin basically defines the word. Plus, one of the original boutique hotels is there: the Hotel San José. Your street cred goes up just by staying there…
Style Made-over motel
Setting Deep in downtown Austin
Why this week? Not only is autumn gorgeous in Austin, but the Hotel San José is taking making the most of it in their leafy garden and pool area. On October 26 and November 23, they’re having cocktail brunches in the space that’s normally just a lounge; on October 14, they’re hosting a tarot night, to get you in the mood for Halloween; and on October 31, they’re going all-out for their Halloween party. Oh, and that’s in addition to the regular DJ sessions on Wednesday nights and every third Sunday afternoon, where you can dance under the stars and fairy lights. And for an extra perk – you’re going to want it after a late night – a special Smith offer gives you their beautiful Continental breakfast for two for free on one morning of your stay.
Our favourite bits… At this impressively remodelled roadside motel, the atmosphere is completely chilled-out, with understated minimalist décor, soothing greys and blues and spiffy mid-century touches like Eames’ arm-shell chairs, old working typewriters to tap on, Polaroids to play with, and bicycles to borrow. Breakfast arrives in a Bento box, iPods come stocked with indie playlists and, come evening, the shady garden turns into an unpretentiously trendy lounge.
Mr & Mrs Smith say…‘Our understated air-conditioned putty-and-pea-green bungalow is at first glance basic, but this Austin boutique hotel compensates with considerate high-on-cred details. Daily poems are pinned nonchalantly to bathroom mirrors, the minibar stocked with gourmet nibbles, and if we need them, cameras, typewriters, iPods and bikes are available to borrow. There are even reasonably priced Havaianas and Toms in place of slippers – handy given that we have a sociable new city to explore and we’re a stroll from live music, hill walks and dirt-cheap pulled pork.’
You say… ‘This hotel is very minimalist in the coolest of ways. There’s a great comfy bed and plenty of room in the Deluxe Standard. The outdoor lounge is filled with the Austin hip and a perfect place for a classic Michelada. The people at the front desk were always helpful…’ Read all Hotel San José reviews…
