Hunting down the world’s most romantic hotel rooms – and giving them a thorough going over, of course – is our raison d’être, so the Sexiest Bedroom in the World category at the Smith Hotel Awards got our pulses racing. Boutique hotel lovers (and dirty-weekenders) voted for bedrooms that inspired them to swing from the chandeliers – from Hampshire tree houses to beach villas in the Maldives – and saucepots Immodesty Blaize, Garance Doré and Kama Carnes acted as our expert judges. In the first post showcasing the stars of our Hotel Awards, we celebrate all 10 of these hip hideouts for holiday flings…
SMITH AWARD WINNER
The room Corfu Suite
The sex factor White hot
This gorgeously gauzy, bright-white bolthole is the kind soft-focused memories are made in. Anouska Hempel has fashioned a decadent South Ken hideaway, where antique bed linens and Eastern mother-of-pearl-inlaid furnishings create an air of seductive serenity. With soft lighting, an ivory-hued four-poster and haute cuisine room service, Blakes’ Corfu Suite was a stand-out winner.
SECOND RUNNER UP
The room Sala del Doge
The sex factor Venetian theatricality
Canalside Ca Maria Adele’s gilt-trimmed, scarlet boudoir is perfect for hot-blooded duos. Exposed dark-wood beams, flock wallpaper and damask fabrics set the scene for regal role-play – whether swinging from the Murano chandeliers, or rattling the Baroque headboard. Your audience? The eponymous doge whose portrait graces one of the walls of this fantasy cocoon. Don’t worry, he loves a bit of drama…
THIRD RUNNER UP
The room Zabuco Honeymoon Villa
The sex factor Treetop trysts
It’s not hard to see why this Caribbean hillside haven is named after a local aphrodisiac: seductive sea and forest views, a freestanding tub for two and a well-stocked wine cooler are sure to set pulses racing. As our judge Kama put it, ‘Less is more in this case: the private setting, stripped-down furnishings, in-suite culinary services and serene energy make Secret Bay the perfect romantic getaway…’
The room Windward Pavilion
The sex factor Panoramic reef
This peninsula perch is carefully designed to maximise the dazzling panoramic view of the Whitsunday Islands in the Coral Sea. A private sundeck is perfect for languid love-ins and infinity pool plunging, but the best seat in the house is the mod-style bed: facing the floor-to-ceiling windows, it provides a dramatic backdrop to any sauced-up shenanigans, or snuggled-up sea gazing with fizz from the gourmet minibar.
The room Beach Pool Villa
The sex factor Sea-kissed scenery
Privacy is prerequisite when it comes to romantic retreats, and these intimate Indian Ocean-facing villas get the level of seclusion just right. Besides the discreet presence of your personal host, you’ll be totally alone: dining on the tranquil terrace at sunset, soaking in the outdoor rain shower or lounging in bed looking out over your private infinity pool, watching it melt into the turquoise-tinted horizon. Bliss.
The room Galaxy Infinity Pool Sanctuary
The sex factor Lovers’ island lair
Part Bond villain abode, part island idyll, this unique stay could arouse some curious Dr. No-themed fantasies. However, bold design decisions – notably, removing an entire wall of each room – reign in the Sixties-style kitsch for top-flight colour-splashed Caribbean chic. Spill into your sprawling infinity pool, cooled by fragrant ocean breezes, before settling in for some above-board open-air amour.
The room One Bedroom Villa
The sex factor Bunk by the beach
The Maldives are one hell of an aphrodisiac: this string of sublime isles is the archetypal lovers’ lure. However, the low-key luxe of Cocoa Island by Como’s ultra-private villas would give any cliché an inferiority complex. White-on-white interiors, a veiled raised bed, sun-worshipping outdoor shower and a terrace from which you can slip straight into the sea will fulfil all your amorous imaginings.
The room Tree House Studio Suite
The sex factor Me Tarzan, you Jane
It’s easy to suspend reality when you’re floating in the treetops; accessed by gangplank, these foliage-framed suites are playful yet polished, flooded with light from floor-to-ceiling windows – offering verdant views from your bed. There’s also a kitchenette and breakfast hampers delivered to your door, so you won’t need to come down from cloud nine.
The room Hudson Suite
The sex factor Elite exhibitionism
Get high on voyeuristic thrills and New York skyline vistas in this 400sq ft downtown den that’s got more windows than walls. Shrug off your clothes (and inhibitions) for a dip in the freestanding bath tub – the centrepiece of a brazenly transparent bathroom. With sleek furnishings, mood lighting and a vast view-facing bed, this suite is anything but standard.
The room Frangipani
The sex factor Delusions of grandeur
If you yen for Versace-style gold-and-white opulence, you’ll fall hard for this South African suite, tucked away in a modern, vineyard-set Versailles. Lose yourselves in the ballroom-sized mirrored bathroom, complete with a bath tub for two and a chaise longue for posing in nothing but pearls. A monumental marble four-poster, an impressive wine cellar and unparalleled service help fuel the fantasy, too.
We’ve released the winners in all categories of the Smith Hotel Awards. Why not book one of our sexiest bedrooms for a surprise Valentine’s Day stay?
