Many happy returns to London Fashion Week: the industry’s coolest catwalk collection celebrates 25 years of fabulousness, starting today.
Designers might go to New York to make money and Paris to show off … but London is where the most creative and crazy fashion moments happen (ok, as a London-based fashion ed I might be a bit biased, but anywhere that sees Alexander McQueen create a water-logged catwalk one year and Miss Piggy on the front row the next is pretty darn cool).
To celebrate, we caught up with the man behind LFW ’09’s hottest ticket, Johnny Blue Eyes, whose House of Blue Eyes show is already causing near-hysteria among the fash pack. AND even more exciting, he’s given us his top 10 style tips, which we’ll post tomorrow, just to keep you on your statement-shoe-clad toes.
Last year, the super-stylist and friend to the stars (how ‘fashion’ does that sound, sweetie?) persuaded none other than Kate Moss to return to the catwalk after four years to model some of his genius designs at his launch party-cum-show, which also saw host Ana Matronic and catwalking sing-star Beth Ditto get into some radical get-ups for a spot of crowd-pleasing tail-feather shakin’. So we can only imagine what he’s got in store for us next week.
So, without further ado… heeere’s Johnny! (Pictured as the style messiah, we assume.)
It has to be the Chelsea Hotel in New York, as an artist it moves me on so many levels… the history, the art in the hallways, the energy and funk. Or, for somewhere truly magical, an isolated hut in the Maldives.
Tell us where you love to travel for work (and, of course, fun)…
For work, and also for fun, it’s always the big apple of New York City! It’s inspiring and fantastical on so many levels: really great people to work with, yummy food and amazing shopping from the flea markets (check out a great one in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn – I’ve sourced the most gorgeous vintage garments and jewellery there) to Canal Street for cheap, fun presents.
What do you never leave home without?
My big, black crocodile doctor’s bag (people always ask me what I have in it!) and a simple silver crucifix ring that I’ve worn for years.
If you could be anywhere now, where would it be and with whom?
Right now, it’s Monday 16th February at 8.30pm and I would love to be with my gorgeous sister Mary, and my dear friend Gel in Nandos in Shepherd’s Bush, laughing and gossiping about the House of Blue Eyes show whilst chowing down on Peri Peri chicken and drinking a nice cold beer… in fact, I’m going to call them right now!
