There’s no bad time to go to New York City, but we’ll vouch for summer as an especially good time to go when you have a rooftop pool (told you we loved rooftop bars and activities) as gorgeous – and full of gorgeous people – as the one at Soho House New York, our hotel of the week…
Style SoHo chic
Setting Buzzy Meatpacking District
Why this week? This lower Manhattan hotspot has just come off a months-long renovation of many of its rooms, so there’s no better time to give them a test run. Even better, to celebrate, they’re offering a Smith-exclusive Soho House deal for stays beginning on Thursday and Friday nights until September.
Our favourite bits At the New York outpost of this London-originated members club, it’s all urban sophistication and breathtaking Manhattan views. The big rooms live up to their name, filled with a well-chosen blend of contemporary and vintage-style furniture, but we’d spend most of our time on the sixth floor, where the Restaurant and relaxed Drawing Room are filled with arts and media big-wigs working, networking and sipping cappuccinos. DJs spin by the rooftop pool at night, new releases screen in the movie theatre and the Cowshed spa is as good as any you’d go outside for.
Mr & Mrs Smith say… ‘Music started the moment we stepped through the door, activated by motion sensors, and there was an iPod dock hooked up to the surround sound so we could play our own music. The style was understated and chic: an exciting mix of contemporary and retro furniture, surrounding a huge bed covered with ‘jump on me’ pillows.
Up on the rooftop terrace, cocktails were flowing and well-dressed thirtysomethings were lying on day beds around the pool. The music had a cool British flavour (no doubt inspired by the British owners): Rolling Stones, Smiths, Joy Division. We ate at the restaurant next to the pool, where well-groomed waiters, who certainly knew their Chloé from their Gucci, provided attentive service.’ Read the full review of Soho House New York…
