Congratulations to The Pig – on the Beach, which was crowned Best Smith Hotel 2015 at the Smith Hotel Awards shindig last night.
This beautiful boutique stay in Dorset already has a dedicated fan base, but in celebration, we’d like to give you the lowdown on why, after votes from 22,000 hip hotel-goers and no less than 50 trendsetting judges, this hotel was declared the best of them all…
WHY DID IT WIN? We don’t just hand out gongs willy nilly; the Best Smith Hotel winner has to be an excellent all-rounder and this coastal outpost of the Pig (there are four in total, including the Pig, the Pig near Bath and the Pig – in the Wall), excels on all fronts. There are the views of Studland’s soul-restoring grassy stretches leading out to the bay, there’s a menu of micro-seasonal ingredients harvested in the hotel’s garden or from neighbouring suppliers, there’s the magical manor that looks like the set for one of the happier Harry Potter movies, and the charmingly eccentric decor. It all conspires to make guests happier than pigs in – well, you know…
OUR FAVOURITE BITS The Pig brand’s rep for I-want-to-kidnap-the-chef cuisine rises to new heights here, with edible treats such as home-smoked pork belly from Purbeck, crispy courgette flowers from the grounds, and Hampshire rhubarb cheesecake with wild rosehip syrup. ‘Piggy bits’ are a perennial favourite and the ‘literally picked this morning’ section of the menu is a constant delight.
BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE We’re also madly in love with the dovecote hideaways – romantic little cottages, where the doves have been evacuated to make way for all a’flutter twosomes instead. And – while the word ‘glamping’ makes us feel clammy – Harry’s Hut, the compact trailer cabins you see above, is an adorable weekend hideaway. In one, there’s a freestanding bath tub; in t’other, there’s a log burner and a double bed.
YOU SAY… ‘We loved everything.’ Bob, BlackSmith, stayed 1 October 2015.
MR & MRS SMITH SAY… ‘And the winner of Best Smith Hotel 2015 is… the Pig – on the Beach.’
So, do you want to stay at officially the best hotel of 2015? Then hoof it to The Pig – on the Beach.
