After a week of frantic texting, tweeting, emailing, tweeting, checking Facebook and then tweeting again, maybe what we need is to get away from all those glaring LCD screens and remember what life was like back in the good old days. The ivy-clad Blantyre in Massachusetts would be a welcome escape, with its candlelit dining and leafy surroundings (oh, and WiFi too if you really need it)…

Style Old-fashioned opulence
Setting Burnt orange woodland

Why this week? Guests who fear the indulgence-withdrawal symptoms that may well hit on parting from Blantyre can stretch their stay by another day: the hotel is offering four nights for the price of three for stays between 1 November–31 December. Top tip: It’s worth signing up to become a Mr & Mrs Smith member, as lucky members also get treated to $200 to use in the spa.

Our favourite bits The fairytale surroundings with an abundance of flowers, the romantic decor, and the ridiculously comfortable bedrooms– especially the Crimson Suite with its palatial four-poster and wood-burning fireplace. Also, the fact you can have cheese fondue served to you anytime, anywhere.

Mr & Mrs Smith say ‘Our grand bedroom, the Blue Room, has high ceilings, ‘Goodwood Park’ mouldings, and windows that just invite you to stand there in this room with a view and brood deeply about whether we can ever really just connect or not feel like luggage on a conveyor belt going in circles. Blantyre is a coral reef of bric-a-brac, high quality mind you, but the owner must be a bowerbird; she just can’t stop bringing treasures back to the nest…’
