Our quest for this week’s champ has taken us a-wandering in Edinburgh, and, more specifically, to Tigerlily, a dashing den a block back from Princes Street…

Why this week? Throughout March, April and May, you can brush up on your cupcake-making skills at the same time as staying at this boutique beauty by partaking in one of the baking classes on offer. And you can stick around for Sunday night and not pay a penny for the privilege, with their three for two offer, exclusively for Smith members staying until the end of April.

Our favourite bits The restaurant is a huge open plan hangout that’s gorgeous to look at. Trying to decide whether you fancy British, Mediterranean or Asian cuisine from the extensive menus will necessitate at least one aperitif to keep you going. There’s a built-in nightclub in the basement. Georgian Suites 1 and 12 are best for making romantic gestures, with four poster beds, great views, open fires, double sinks, freestanding baths and waterproof remote controls for the bathroom TV.

Mr & Mrs Smith say ‘As the taxi pulls up outside the Georgian townhouse, the first thing we spot is a smart black-clad bouncer, complete with Madonna-esque earpiece. This could cause guests who hadn’t done their homework to wonder if they’d rocked up at a nightclub by mistake. Inside, two beautiful hostesses in slinky black dresses and killer heels are waiting to check us in. Forget traditional lobby style: this boutique hotel has thrown the rule book out the window, working a bright, modern and luxe theme with mosaic mirror tiles, silver, white and glass. And that’s just the reception.

Upstairs, our room has floor-to-ceiling windows running the length of one wall, each swathed in luscious drapings. There’s a silky designer sofa for lounging, and an enormous four-poster for bouncing on. Flames flicker cheekily through the artfully arranged pebbles of the ultra-modern fireplace set into one wall, and there’s a heavily mirrored, fit-for-Hollywood dressing table.

We discover a laden minibar, and I drool over a tiny tin of Spanish olives, paw some Designers Guild products, and discover an exciting line of sophisticated Scottish cocoa-y treats from Coco of Bruntsfield – as well as a thoughtful selection of spirits, bottled beer, and some decent wine. And how could we have missed the bathroom, which could house a family of four? Its shower is big enough to dine in…’
