This week, our prize-scooping hotel is a decadent den in a rather smart corner of the city that never sleeps. Numerous 24-hour options aside, we reckon you’ll be hankering after a nap if your bed happens to be at The Surrey hotel in New York…
Why this week? The kind folk over in New York are offering all Smith members 30 per cent off stays until early September, so hit the city this month to see if you really can fry an egg on a car roof in high summer.
Our favourite bits The building, and then the bathrooms: the 1930s Beaux Arts structure has a Lauren Rottet-designed interior, which nods to Chanel with its padded leather walls and writing pads, white and black lacquer and a bar modelled on a powder compact. The bathrooms have grey- and white-veined marble surfaces, black, etched water glasses and thick Pratesi bathrobes.
Mr & Mrs Smith say ‘Every aspect of this hotel is luxurious, from the shoe-polishing service to the dazzling spa, where each treatment room has its own dressing armoire and vanity, and some come with a shower or bath. Such attention to detail is unsurprising, given the Surrey’s pedigree – a glittering cast of movie stars and politicians have passed through its doors since it opened in 1926, including JFK, Bette Davis and Claudette Colbert.
Today, the restaurant and bar attract guests and native New Yorkers in equal measure. And if you want to experience New York high life (quite literally), head to the 17th floor and order cocktails in the ravishing roof garden, with all the city’s sights below you. You can even pick out your first port of call on Museum Mile, and which restaurant you’ll eat in afterwards….’
