It’s going to take a little more than the washout weather and another Brit-free Wimbledon final (22 years now, and counting) to stop the hotel-hungry Smith team celebrating the best of British. And so homegrown is the flavour this month. For good measure, we’ve also introduced some Mallorcan delights with praiseworthy pools, a holiday haven in Long Island’s Hamptons and a whole new bag of treasure from Down Under…

The British contingent of our online hotel collection has been proudly joined by a few new friends this month. In junior-suite-at-the-rutland-2Edinburgh, choose from Millers64, a boutique B&B in leafy Pilrig Park, or the elegant castle-facing Rutland Hotel. If Yorkshire’s more your thing, play Heathcliff and Cathy at Yorebridge House – a romantic rural retreat in the depths of the Dales. Or if you have a mini-army of your own, they’ll be sure of an accommodating welcome at kids-friendly, ivy-covered manor, the Elms.

Admittedly there’s only so far patriotic fervor can go in the midst of a resurging recession, flash floods and a three-day heatwave (any chance of making it summer-long next time?), and so we had no choice but to turn our eyes on sunnier, more exotic climes. The result is a new-and-improved Mallorca collection, each with its own super swimming pool. We love the private plunge offering that looks out to sea at Hospes Maricel, the stone-clad infinity-edged wonder at the 16th-century Mirabó de Valldemossa and the rooftop retreat at Hotel Tres in Palma’s old quarter.pool-view

July also sees New York on the Smith radar. We’ve discovered a magically musical boutique hotel in the form of Ace Hotel, midtown’s hippest new hideaway. And for a dream vacation in the shining beacon of dream vacations, hit the Hamptons via André Balazs’s bright and breezy motel-turned-fancy-beach-house, Sunset Beach.

Our new office Down Under has been beavering away, too, leaving no stone unturned in the search for Smith-worthy boutique hotels the Asia-Pacific region over. So far, we’ve found North Bundaleer, a rustic and rural Victorian homestead in the wine-producing Clare Valley, and heaven in Hobart in the shape of the Islington, a cosy Regency hotel with a sexy modern extension. If that’s not enough, hang out in old Hollywood (or Home and Away)-style at Jonah’s, a clifftop retreat overlooking Sydney’s jetset Northern Beaches, or search for blue-footed boobies at Australia’s answer to the Galapagos with a stay at Southern Ocean Lodge on Kangaroo Island.6_flinders_suite

Across the Antipodean waters in New Zealand, make use of your own personal chef and perhaps even a Porsche at Eagles Nest, where state-of-the-art villas overlook the subtropical Bay of Islands.

Next month, we’re heading back to Spain, this time to the mainland. You can look forward to new finds in Madrid, Girona and the Basque Country, as well as another Hamptons hideaway or two and, you’ve guessed it, more British boltholes. Check back in August…
