Still Googling ‘where’s sunny?’ in the hopes of a last-minute break? Crete‘s still coming up with a row of happy little suns, and with a whopping discount at pool-blessed resort Domes of Elounda, you’ll booking a trip to Elysium in less time than it takes to joyously smash a plate.

Hotel of the week | Domes of Elounda, Crete

STYLE Perfectly rounded resort
SETTING Peaceful Mirabello Bay

Domes of Elounda hibernates over winter, shutting its doors from November; so that leaves you a month and a little bit to book an island break and get some use out of that ludicrously expensive bikini you bought. If that seems like a flimsy precedent, 30 per cent off all room types – yes, even those with private pools and dreamy sea views – should convince you.

If you didn’t know what a laconium is before you visited Domes of Elounda’s glittering, super-sized spa, you’ll wonder how you coped without one as you’re being delightfully steamed in its confines. Dining on fresh seafood, on an under-lit jetty, at Topos 1910 restaurant is an experience you’ll have rose-tinted memories about. And, if you have nippers in tow, the resort’s Disney-themed rooms and free – yes, free – kids club will be a godsend.

YOU SAY… ‘The staff were, without exception, amazing – charming, helpful, efficient and they spoke excellent English. Our suite was fabulous, the buffet restaurant was superb, and the private beach and stretch of lovely Mediterranean sea were just what we needed. And we also liked being upgraded on arrival to a suite with its own pool – on account of you, they said!’ Simon, BlackSmith, October 2014

MR & MRS SMITH SAY… ‘Supper at the Domes: now there’s relaxation for you. The hotel hosts gastronomy festivals, inviting internationally acclaimed chefs to cook for their guests. Luckily, we’re here when Yves Mattagne, an exceptionally talented French chef, has culinary control. Despite initial reservations (‘Will we have to talk to other people?’) Mr Smith and I are fizzing with excitement as we dress for the festival. It’s a wrench, though, to leave our boutique boudoir: a sea-facing suite with an outdoor Jacuzzi overlooking Elounda’s ink-blue bay. ‘ Read the full Domes of Elounda hotel review
