Call it an Easter holiday or call it spring break. But if you’ve successfully stuck to a Lent promise – whether it’s giving up chocolate, booze or an excessive use of emojis – your trip should call for getting back to your old vices.
To mark the end of 40 days of sacrifice, we’ve rounded up ideal destinations for meat, caffeine and sugar-filled celebrations, plus more. And if you’re not a Lent traditionalist, go ahead and pick your poison anyway. Indulgent escapes are open to all.
If you gave up alcohol, head to London
Sure, the Big Apple has its Manhattans and Singapore has its Slings, but London nabbed three spots in the top five for The World’s 50 Best Bars last year. Winning watering holes include Artesian, Nightjar and American Bar. We also have a soft spot for the crafty gin concoction with a bee pollen sprinkle at the Zetter Townhouse hotel.
If you gave up social media, head to Paris
Unsurprisingly, the City of Light gives good Instagram. If you’ve taken a hiatus from your feed, hop back on social in Parisian style. The architecture, the eclairs and, yes, even the Eiffel Tower are anxiously awaiting your comeback on Insta, Snapchat, Twitter, Facebook, et al. #nofilter needed.
If you gave up sweets, head to New Orleans
Between the beignets at Café Du Monde and the strawberry preserves spread thick on homemade buttermilk biscuits at Soniat House hotel, NOLA knows how to treat your sweet tooth. Oh, and don’t forget warm pralines straight from a copper pot at Aunt Sally’s. Just be sure to use the local pronunciation, ‘prah-leens.’
If you gave up sex, head to Sorrento, Italy and the Bellevue Syrene hotel
Call it quits with celibacy in the most scintillating way. The Roccia Suite at the Bellevue Syrene won the title of Sexiest Bedroom at last year’s Smith Awards. Housed in an ancient grotto, the room has a heated hydro-massage pool that’s surrounded by exposed stone walls. There’s also a canopied king-size bed and a balcony with sea views.
If you gave up meat, head to Austin
Beef ribs, brisket, pulled pork… yep, the protein abstainers among us should head to Texas to plunder America’s slow-smoked riches. In Austin, pitmasters like Aaron Franklin (of Franklin Barbecue on E. 11th Street) and Lance Kirkpatrick (of Stiles Switch BBQ & Brew on N. Lamar Boulevard) are on par with pop stars in their celebrity status.
If you gave up coffee, head to Melbourne
This might be the best city for jetlag – Australia’s coffee capital takes its brew seriously. You’ll find syphons, clovers, cold drips and pourover coffees throughout the city. Satisfy your caffeine craving at beloved cafes like Dead Man Espresso on Market, Auction Rooms on Errol or Seven Seeds on Berkeley Street.
