Is that the heartstrings-tugging sound of Fado melodies in the air? As summer approaches, make like a Lisbonite and head to Cascais’ buzzy beaches, emerald waters and picturesque cliffsides: boutique bolthole Farol Design Hotel awaits…

Farol Design Hotel | Cascais, Portugal

Style Slick and fashionable
Setting Local to Lisbon

Why this week? Lately, we’ve been hankering for a few blissful days on the Portuguese coast (it could be something to do with the cats-and-dogs downpours here at Smith HQ). What could be more vivifying than sun-kissed sands, cooling breezes coming off the Atlantic surf and (ahem) silky custard tarts for breakfast? This week we’ve set our sights on Faro Design Hotel in Cascais, the genteel chocolate-box town that once played host to the Portuguese royal family. If its saltwater pool, cliff-perched restaurant and rock-star stylings can’t tempt you, perhaps a timely summer treat can: the hotel’s offering 20 per cent off stays of three nights or more from 15 June to 31 September.

Suites are dashing: soothingly monochrome, with hydro-massage tubs and floor-to-ceiling windows for startling panoramic views. And, if you grow weary of all this lounging and sea-gazing, Lisbon is just 45 minutes away.

Mr & Mrs Smith say…‘Truth be, I can be wary of establishments that choose to use words such as ‘design’ in their name – pointing out such a trait shouldn’t be necessary. But here it adds a playfulness to what otherwise looks at quick glance like a grand seaside home. In the lobby, painted portraits of supermodels are the first indication of the private owners’ appreciation of the fashion world. When the designer behind our simple, white sea-view abode mapped out its look, perhaps she was riding the Noughties’ minimalist wave – it contrasts refreshingly with the hotel’s more flamboyant areas. The restraint lets the view do the loudest talking: which is appreciated when you have a panorama of the Atlantic to appreciate.’ Read the full Mr & Mrs Smith review…
