We’re hitting the highway! To celebrate Mr & Mrs Smith’s first-ever Los Angeles office, we’re driving from our New York City digs to our new Southern California address in an eight-day cross-country road trip.

We’ll be taking a southern route and stopping along the way at Soniat House in New Orleans, Hotel San Jose in Austin, The Saguaro Scottsdale hotel and the Viceroy Santa Monica. Our journey begins tomorrow, 16 June, and you can follow along on Instagram and Twitter at @smithhotels. But for now, here’s a look at our road-tripping team…

The great American road trip | Antony Merkel

ANTONY MERKEL | TRAVEL SPECIALIST

YEARS WITH A DRIVER’S LICENSE 15

MINOR INFRACTIONS Two (major) speeding tickets, but who’s counting?

ROAD-TRIPPING STRENGTHS Extensive knowledge of car games (both popular and obscure), great sense of direction and an uncanny ability to teach everyone in the car how to harmonize during sing-alongs

ROAD-TRIPPING WEAKNESSES Can’t sleep in a car or sit still for prolonged periods of time – yes, there will be fidgeting

FAVOURITE TUNES FOR THE ROAD Nineties pop/hip-hop to keep the energy up, show tunes for those long desert stretches, St Lucia for the chill quiet pensive moments and, of course, ‘Road Trippin’ by Red Hot Chili Peppers

PREFERRED SEAT Driver’s seat, baby!

The great American road trip | Amelia Mularz

AMELIA MULARZ | EDITOR

ROAD-TRIPPING STRENGTHS Pretty sure I can wrestle a rattlesnake and I can eat anything (see SNACKS below)

ROAD-TRIPPING WEAKNESSES Zero sense of direction and, as a New Yorker, I haven’t driven in 10 years

MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO Seeing Donald Judd’s concrete sculptures in the Chihuahua Desert in Texas, cannonballing into the pool at The Saguaro Scottsdale and discovering my colleagues’ deepest, darkest secrets

FAVOURITE SNACKS FOR THE ROAD Gas station hot dogs (I’m not afraid of heat lamps) and beef jerky

FAVOURITE TUNES FOR THE ROAD I’m into classic driving songs like ‘Truckin’ by the Grateful Dead, ‘Tangled Up in Blue’ by Bob Dylan, ‘On the Road Again’ by Willie Nelson, ‘America’ by Simon and Garfunkel and ‘Ramble On’ by Led Zeppelin

PREFERRED SEAT Backseat – how else will I write from the road?

The great American road trip | Anthony Gould

ANTHONY GOULD | TRAVEL SPECIALIST

YEARS WITH A DRIVER’S LICENSE 6

MINOR INFRACTIONS I was once caught speeding on Thanksgiving because I didn’t want to burn the turkey. Long story…

ROAD-TRIPPING STRENGTHS I can sing! Which will come in handy when we hit long, uneventful stretches. Also, I can sense danger and psychos

ROAD-TRIPPING WEAKNESSES I need to stop often for snacks and to stretch my legs – this is critical

FAVOURITE SNACKS FOR THE ROAD Skittles

FAVOURITE TUNES FOR THE ROAD ‘Klapp Klapp’ by Little Dragon, ‘Party Talk’ by Craft Spells, ‘The Dreamer’ by Common, ‘Everything is Everything’ by Lauryn Hill and ‘Asleep on the Bus (On Planets Remix)’ by BESTIE & On Planets

The great American road trip | Jenny Grace

JENNY GRACE | TRAVEL SPECIALIST

MINOR INFRACTIONS I live in LA, where parking tickets are essentially a built-in cost of living

ROAD-TRIPPING STRENGTHS Superb sense of direction and eyes like a hawk

ROAD-TRIPPING WEAKNESSES I get car sick if I read and I obsessively listen to new songs on repeat

MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO Exploring parts of the US I’ve never seen, laughing with friends and the unforeseeable adventures we’ll encounter along the way

LEAST EXCITED ABOUT No longer having this road trip to look forward to

PREFERRED SEAT Shotgun
