It’s hard to believe that rolling luggage has only been around since 1970. And while its inventor, Mr Bernard Sadow, didn’t reinvent the wheel, you could say he gave the suitcase a massive makeover by giving it wheels. Since then, the evolution of the travel bag has continued. See below for cases that will charge your iPhone, a carry-on that will tell you how much it weighs as well as when it’s nearby. And while we’re dazzled by technology, we’re also enamoured by fashion. Sometimes a bag is a showstopper simply for its handmade leather or golden hardware.

Here we’ve rounded up six bags that had us at ‘Hello… would you like to check-in?’ Whether high-tech or high-fashion, they’ll set the tone for your trip before you even head out the door.

Away, medium bag in sandAway The Medium suitcase
Two former Warby Parker executives, Jen Rubio and Steph Korey, shifted their focus from spectacles to suitcases and baggage claim has never been cooler since. The bags feature a slam-resistant outer shell, a patent-pending compression system (so yes, you can shop souvenirs to your heart’s content) and a removable laundry bag. Plus, the carry-on version has a built-in battery with two USB ports. Never miss a Snap again.

Globe-Trotter, Mykonos bagGlobe-Trotter Sofía Sanchez de Betak Mykonos Trolley Case
Let Globe-Trotter be your guide, stylistically speaking. This particular case was designed in collaboration with art director and fashion consultant Sofía Sanchez de Betak. It’s inspired by her travels through Greece, and even includes an illustrated scavenger map of Mykonos on the inner lining. Other bags in the collection include maps of Athens, Messinia and Santorini.

Whether you’re off to a meeting in NYC, a gala in Paris or a dressed-up dog wedding in Florence (hey, you never know), treat your duds right. Here’s a garment bag that honours both form and function. It’s water resistant, with a leather panel up top, an exterior zip pocket for accessories, an interior fold-down hanger, a handle and a shoulder strap. Plus it just looks good.

They say this carry-on has beauty and brains. The handle doubles as a scale (just lift the bag and check the Raden app on your phone for weight), there are two built-in chargers with USB ports, and the bag’s proximity sensors will let you know when your suitcase is coming down the carousel at baggage claim.

Shinola, Flight Zip Tote

Shinola Flight Zip Tote
Impress everyone in your row with an in-flight bag made of American leather. Interior zip compartments, open pockets and an exterior pocket make mean there’s adequate space for stashing all your goods – wallet, snacks, itineraries, magazines, etc. The strap is removable, but the sartorial sense of pride you’ll get from carrying this tote will linger.

Show Saturday and Sunday how much they mean to you with quality Italian leather in a vibrant shade (note: the bag also comes in aqua, navy, yellow, camel, black, periwinkle and turquoise… if salmon-y pink isn’t your thing). There’s plenty of room in there for all of your weekend plans, and the best thing about this tote – it looks better with wear, so go ahead and toss it in the car, then throw caution to the wind as you skip town.
