Feel the beat of the Thai jungle at Kirimaya boutique hotel in Khao Yai, just a few hours’ drive north-east of Bangkok. Go elephant-spotting on safari in the national park, slip into the soothing spa or enjoy a round of golf with a backdrop of tropical mountains…

Why this week? There’s nothing we love more than having a jolly good swing. Until 25 December, Smith members staying three nights or more at Kirimaya can book an exclusive golf holiday package that allows you to take to the hotel’s Jack Nicklaus-designed 18-hole course (right) as often as you like. That’s right, you can tee off on unlimited rounds, although you’ll need to pay for your golf cart or caddy. Plus you’ll enjoy pampering Smith extras including a bottle of wine on arrival, and 20 per cent off spa treatments and food and wine in the restaurants and bars (excluding room-service alcohol).

Our favourite bits The Tented Villas (left), with massive sunken spa pools at their hearts, are reminiscent of somewhere you might stay on a decadent safari adventure, but it’s the serenity that really makes this a special sanctuary. With a view that encompasses the lush greens of the golf course and peaks, the pool (top) is a spot that encourages all-day slothing. Similarly sedate – all open sides and surrounding ponds – is Acala Restaurant, with its mod Thai and international menu. You’ll want to tear yourself away from Kirimaya for one day though: you’re on the boundaries of Khao Yai National Park, so ask the concierge to organise a safari where you may see elephants, gibbons, hornbills and, if you’re very lucky, tigers.

Mr & Mrs Smith says… ‘Post-dip, Mrs Smith slopes off for an in-room massage while, at Mist bar, I enjoy a vodka tonic and endless vistas of the golf course and mountains. After an hour, I head back to indulge in a pre-arranged, complimentary milk and rose petal bath drawn by our butler. Lights dimmed and candles flickering, Mrs Smith shyly slips in and I follow suit.’ Read the full Kirimaya review.
