Summer was breezing right along until we realised that August is already more than half over and Labor Day – the American long weekend holiday that signals the end of summer (this year August 31–September 2) – is almost upon us. You don’t even want to see how sad our summer bucket lists look.

So, we’re digging our heels into the sand and using the bank holiday as an excuse for one last hurrah in the States. The question is just what kind of hurrah it’s going to be…

Ruschmeyer's hotel Montauk | Labor Day weekend escapes

The Hamptons, NY
The destination for well-heeled New Yorkers, these cutesy Long Island towns will still be hopping over the holiday weekend. You could just hang out by a pool with a cocktail the whole time, but you’d be missing out on the lively party scene, where laid-back designer duds are de rigueur. Ruschmeyer’s, in beachy Montauk, takes the summer camp fête to the nth degree.

Oceana Santa Barbara hotel | Labor Day weekend escapes

Santa Barbara and San Diego, CA
Little feels more summery than Southern California’s beaches, where the Beach Boys’ songs will still be your internal soundtrack as you drive down the PCH and try your hand at riding the waves. San Diego and Santa Barbara are both just a couple hours from Los Angeles, and Rancho Valencia (outside San Diego) and Oceana Santa Barbara (whose location is pretty obvious) both still have availability for the holiday weekend.

The Inn at English Meadows Kennebunk, Maine | Labor Day weekend escapes

As you saw last week, we’re on the Maine bandwagon. Lobster rolls, sailboats, lighthouses and plenty of outdoorsy pursuits shout classic New England summer for as long as the warm weather lasts. So, we’re grabbing our boat shoes and heading for the seaside towns of Portland – home to the Pomegranate and Danforth Inns – or Kennebunk – where the Inn at English Meadows would welcome us.

The Carneros Inn Napa Valley | Labor Day weekend escapes

Napa Valley, CA
Wineries, green rolling hills, hiking and bicycling through the countryside… That sounds like our idea of the perfect summer escape. In fact, that sounds like our dream getaway any time of year, but a three-day weekend amid early September’s perfect weather is the perfect excuse. After a day of exploring, sip glasses of that pinot grigio you picked up on the patio overlooking vineyards at the Carneros Inn.
