Mr & Mrs Smith’s very own frontierswoman, Mary, continues her journey to the west, camera at the ready, and drops in on some of the hottest hotels in the neighbourhood…

Next stops: the Ranch at Rock Creek and Amangani

The Ranch at Rock Creek opened last week (we move fast at Smith). We stopped in on a covert research mission here as the hotel was officially kicking off with a very private, very confidentiality-waiverish exclusive hire… so we snuck our way in to the hottest thing to hit the Rockies and, man oh man, is this place somewhere to shout about! Anyone with a luxury Wild West  vacation in mind should giddy on up faster than you can say Pocahontas. On another bizarre, small-world side note… I actually bumped into a famous fashion designer friend (and Smith hotel reviewer) out here in middle-of-nowhere Montana, completely by accident. Crazy.

1 They don’t call this ‘big sky country’ for nothing…

2 I couldn’t take many snapshots due to ‘privacy issues’ of celebrity guests but this is something to whet your whistle: technicolourful, kitsch, country café servicing Rock Creek’s luxury ensuite, complete with front porch and rocking chairs on the river tents.

Doe Brothers 1920s soda fountain in town with the most INCREDIBLE sandwich ever to cross my lips (and that’s saying a lot)… Soft pretzel roll reuben with home-fried skin-on potato chips. Oh my word. Plus a thick frosty vanilla shake for the road!


4 The booming metropolis of Phillipsburg, Montana – famous for sapphire mining if you need to pick up a little bling while you’re in town…


5 Hopefully fines don’t triple if the driver is snapping photos of the insanely beautiful clouds while behind the wheel… Everything under control, I swear.

6 We tried to wait around for Old Faithful to blow but it was going to be at least another 45 minutes and we still had to make our way through West Yellowstone National Park and Grand Tetons to get to Amangani. We saw bison and elk on our drive and then proceeded to eat elk sirloin chilli and braised bison short ribs for dinner on the following two nights – is that wrong? It was so right on the tastebuds.

10 When I say ‘perfect’ I mean perfect – macadamia-encrusted French toast with huckleberry compote and maple syrup. Oh god…

  • OMG I want that French toast with huckleberry jam RIGHT NOW. Does Amangani do deliveries?!

  • But, hang on a minute, what’s that green stuff on the side? It looks like – but surely it can’t be? – kale?

  • Oh didn’t you know? It’s garnishes galore in America…. have had plenty of perfectly pleasant portions of home fries nearly ruined by a rogue wedge of orange or unnecessary sprigette of parsley. This was an exception however… never noticed the questionable kale. Was too focused on licking the rest of the plate clean!

  • Kale garnish…you’re right…they’re gone from today forward.

  • But has the huckleberry milkshake made its way on to the menu yet? I’d be over the moon with that as a garnish to any meal!
