Roksanda Ilincic – innovator of sculptural womenswear – has whipped up ensembles for FLOTUS, Tilda Swinton and a host of other A-list fans. She’s even devised a brutalist dream house for Barbie. And – perhaps her most important project to date – now she’s reinvented the Mr & Mrs Smith Get a Room! gift card.
So, who wouldn’t want to walk in this jet-setting fashion maverick’s block-hued heels? We got the lowdown on her favourite hotel, her travel essentials and where to find London’s zing-iest mojito…
What’s the destination you find most inspirational?
For me, nothing beats London. I moved here to study for my MA in Womenswear at Central Saint Martins, and the city has constantly inspired me ever since. It’s an incredibly creative melting-pot.
So, you’ve arrived in a new city, checked in to a ravishingly beautiful hotel, and unpacked your bags – what’s next?
I always try to get good advice from the locals on where I should be eating and spending my time; I prefer to avoid the usual tourist spots if I can help it. It’s always so much nicer to see the real city.
What’s always in your carry-on?
Red lipstick, a good book and headphones. You don’t need anything else.
That leaves plenty of space for souvenirs. Have you picked up any fascinating finds on your travels?
If I see a flea market or vintage shop I always take a look inside and try to find some treasures. I have a porcelain hand on my desk that holds my pens, that I love; I picked it up on one of those scavenger hunts.
What’s your favourite hotel?
I love The Connaught (above) in London. It’s right around the corner from my store at 9 Mount Street and it’s always such a treat to pop in to the bar for a mojito.
