One of Uxua Casa's nine beachside villasIt’s not often that Bahia is given a run for its money in the beauty stakes. But when 11 supermodels descended upon the beach at the Uxua Casa Hotel to be snapped by Terry Richardson for Pirelli’s 2010 calendar, we reckon the Brazilian bolthole met its match. Sporting the skimpiest of skimpies (or no skimpies at all), a posse of statuesque posers, including Lily Cole, Daisy Lowe and Miranda Kerr, draped themselves across palms, cuddled up to snakes, wrestled with mud and struck acrobatic poses amid the flora and fauna. Props used to protect their modesty included tyres, braces and a three-toed sloth. None of which make effective swimwear.

The calendar was launched on 19 November, and will be dished out to Pirelli’s customers. Though we won’t be getting our hands on a copy (they’re like gold dust, only with breasts), we are planning a trip to Uxua Casa Hotel – a fit-for-a-photoshoot retreat if ever we saw one – though we’ll do so armed with more fabric and less wildlife than Pirelli’s models.

Wilbert Das, owner of Uxua Casa Hotel

Wilbert Das, owner of Uxua Casa and design bigwig at Diesel, said, ‘Terry and I shot an advertising campaign together several years ago, and I’m a huge fan. I started the Uxua project as a tribute to Bahia, the beauty of the landscape, villages and people, and I consider Terry putting a legendary photographic event like the Pirelli shoot at Uxua to be an endorsement of what beautiful things can be realised in this part of the world.’

Style Rustic modernism, casual luxury
Setting Beachside, yet at the heart of village life

The only boutique hotel in the historic main square of Trancoso, Bahia, Uxua Casa Hotel has become the stay of choice in this beautiful seaside village. The Brazilian elite, not to mention style-savvy visitors from the US and Europe, flock to its nine private casas all year round, drawn by its stunning beachside location, dedication to sustainable tourism and the sort of interiors that wouldn’t look out of place in Wallpaper* or Elle Decoration. Its owners have got the balance between luxury and laid-back style just right.
