Turn your phone off, ditch your shoes and revel in the simple beach beauty of Zeavola, the award-winning sustainable stay on the shores of Koh Phi Phi…

WHY THIS WEEK?
Solar eclipses don’t happen every day, so this week we’re in awe of the natural world. And boutique hotels don’t come more, well, natural than Zeavola, a wood-hewn beach base in Koh Phi Phi. Its eco-conscious approach hasn’t gone unnoticed either, with the resort picking up two major sustainability awards in recent weeks for its efforts both simple (water from local wells, sensor-controlled lighting), and one-step-beyond (helping with an offshore coral nursery, thrice-daily beach cleaning). Among Thailand’s neon-lit, built-up sprawls, Zeavola stands out as a true back-to-nature break (and if you’re charmed by its simple pleasures, you might like to know that you can get 15 per cent off stays between 1 April and 31 October).
OUR FAVOURITE BITS
Zeavola is barefoot luxury at its best. Romantics will swoon over the teak-framed villa 51, an actual stone’s throw from the sea, and candlelit dinners on the sand. Those with a (slightly) more active agenda might prefer the scuba dives and speedboat trips around nearby islands (including The Beach‘s Koh Phi Phi Lai) that can be arranged on-site. And few will be able to resist the lure of a proper, peace-restoring Thai massage at the sea-view spa.
MR & MRS SMITH SAY…
‘Given my lover’s incomparable shoe collection, this might seem utterly ridiculous, and I assure you that we are hardly the hippiest couple on God’s boutique-hotelled Earth. It’s just that, here at Zeavola, there is need for neither Choo nor Birkenstock, nor, thank heavens, even Croc. For, with the sands flowing into the white-gold estuaries that form the paths between the bungalows, the distinction between beach and suite is virtually non-existent.’ Read Urban Junkie Addie Chinn’s full anonymous review
