Usually when your job requires you spend the night in…
In our last Postcard from Mallorca, we teamed up with the Balearic-based concierge service Deliciously Sorted and two of their on-isle red-carpet roller-outers, Tor Cooper-Evans and Claire Gauvain from TLC. Normally, these suntanned social butterflies are busy arranging private chefs, jet and boat charter and VIP entry to Ibiza (and now also Mallorca’s) best destinations. Luckily for us, they’ve taken a break from their schedule to give us the next instalment: where to go if you want to swap beats for cocktail-kitted retreats. Over to you then, Tor and Claire (pictured above, centre and right), on how to find some calm amid the palms…
Chill at: One of our favourite places to kick back and chat is Portixol, a small and lovely harbour just outside of Palma. Linger over drinks at Kaskai (+34 (0)971 241 284) and soak up the eclectic and beautiful design, beachside people-watching and cool-as-cucumbers clientele. Roxy’s Beach Bar (+34 (0)639 601 814) on Playa Portals, Puerto Portals, is now officially open, back in its enviable position on the water’s edge. Go there for the cocktails and sunset views. A little tip: give the rum and strawberry milkshakes a try, but keep in mind that they’re deceptively strong!
Sleep at: Ca’s Xorc. It’s the outdoor environment of this retreat near Sóller that is the star of the show; the path around Ca’s Xorc leads you through the dining area – buzzing at lunchtime, candlelit for dinner. When the terrace ends, follow the 100-year-old olive trees down to the swimming pool: not just any swimming pool, but an infinity pool that gives the illusion you’re swimming off the cliff edge and into the valley below.
Chill at: A little-known, seductive secret is the chiringuito at Estellencs (+34 (0)971 628 000), set against the backdrop of a mountain, at the bottom of a charming village. This chill-out spot overlooking the dramatic Western coastline is ultra romantic, with its different levels, sunset views and nocturnal candlelight. The road that leads to the beach is not for the faint-hearted, as it’s very windy and narrow… but the treat that awaits you is more than worth it!
Sleep at: L’Avenida, a boutique hotel in Mallorca tucked away on a quiet road in the mountain-valley town of Sóller. Arty decor and funky lighting play against restored ceiling mouldings and wrought-iron balustrades, giving this 1900s mansion a shot of Ibizan house-party cool. L’Avenida is the perfect location for lazing by the pool, sunsets by the sea, and exploring the jasmine-scented groves of the Tramuntana.
Chill at: With an elevated position on stone terraces above the beach, DJs playing funky sounds and comfortable lounge seating, Las Terrazas Beach Club at 52A Avenida Illetes (+34 971 401 031) is the place to party, seaside, every weekend. Puro Beach (+34 971 744 744), beloved of the beautiful and cosmopolitan, is looking super chic, with its dazzling white interiors. It’s set on a small peninsula with 180-degree views out to sea. Rent a sun bed (booking is essential in high season) and have cocktails delivered to you by the fantastic staff, or sit in the pool sipping champagne and listening to the underwater sound system (beats singing in the bath any day).
Sleep at: Can Estella. A huge glass sea-facing façade reveals this self-catering villa’s headline act: the melt-into-the-horizon Med view. An architect’s dream home steeped in style and state-of-the-art technology. Sleek, polished surfaces provide a striking frame to ultra-modern, designer-label fittings complemented by bespoke suede and velvet soft furnishings. The living area opens out onto a decked sun terrace where a heated infinity pool, Jacuzzi and alfresco shower await.
Chill at: For something off the beaten track, go to Sunset Sunseta (+34 (0)610 831 255) in the beautiful mountain village of Deià. Its elevated terrace has incredible views and the lovable Argentinean proprietor, Facundo, will make you feel like part of the (fabulous) family. Alternatively, head east to Cassai (+34 (0)971 649 721) in Ses Salines, a romantic restaurant in a 300-year-old building, with a deliciously designed courtyard. There’s even a deli and interiors shop opposite, so you can take a bit of Cassai home with you.
Sleep at: Son Brull, which combines urban chic with Mediterranean comfort. Located near Pollença, at the foothills of the Serra de Tramuntana, this historic building has been converted into a modern, design-oriented luxury hotel that beautifully incorporates the original architectural details. It’s a place to chill out, warm up, and be welcomed in style.
