We love food. We love wine (especially on Fridays). We love Napa Valley. Therefore, it brings us great boozy, foodie pleasure to introduce this week’s hotel heart-throb: the vineyard-graced Calistoga Ranch, California…
Style Ravishing ranch retreat
Setting Cosy Californian canyon
Why this week? In March, Napa Valley is a painter’s paradise: the trees are laden with pink and white blossoms and the vineyards are coloured gold by yellow mustard flowers. Need further persuasion? Stay for less, with this boutique hotel offer: three nights for the price of two. (You have to be a Smith member though, to claim it.)
Our favourite bits This is wine country, and the Ranch has got the vineyard to prove it. Vintners from all around the area come to Calistoga throughout the year, the restaurant wine list’s long enough to wallpaper a living room, and the mineral spa even offers to soak you in the stuff. We also love the one-bedroom lodges with outdoor Jacuzzis, where you can bubble away under the starlit oak canopy, sipping cocktails from your wet bar. Calistoga is a natural mineral spring, so its Bathhouse on the banks of Lake Lommel offers private therapeutic water treatments, including (appropriately enough) a skin-shimmering Cabernet Wine Bath.
Mr & Mrs Smith say ‘The 157-acre, 46-room resort is understated Cal-luxe, all low-rise buildings in cedar and stone, punctuated with modern accents such as giant cube lampshades in all the public spaces. There’s a luxurious spa, the Bathhouse, an outdoor yoga deck with soothing views over the valley’s aged oaks, and a dramatic pool overlooked by both a bar and gym. There’s also a cosy wine cave for tastings. So, whichever cornerstone of Californian culture you’re after – wine or workout – Calistoga caters for you. And it feels more like a hamlet than a hotel.
