Why this week?
If frantic last-minute Christmas shopping has worn you out – or you are anticipating that the post-holiday aftermath will leave you in dire need of some spa-and-sleep time – then here lies the perfect solution: a holiday in the verdant Cotswolds countryside. Make it a long break at Ellenborough Park with two nights for the price of one available until 31 January.

Our favourite bits The hotel has 90 gorgeous green acres of National Trust land and a dramatic 15th-century exterior. It’s got plenty of historic gravitas inside, too; the Beaufort Dining Room boasts original Tudor fireplaces and stained glass Oriel windows. The a la carte menu is a tantalising gastronomic experience including dishes such as a chateaubriand of Hereford beef, and a rump of spring lamb. Sports-enthusiasts will be pleased to learn that many rooms overlook the finishing line at Cheltenham Racecourse.

Luxury boutique spa hotel Ellenborough Park in the CotswoldsMr & Mrs Smith say… ‘A distinguished vignette greets us at the Cotswold-stone hotel for our arrival: cornflower-blue sky and a Kermit-green lawn that stretches to wild fields that roll down to the edge of Cheltenham’s groomed racetrack. Sunshine alchemised the crenallated towers and centuries-old stonework to pure gold. We couldn’t help but be curious about this property’s heritage … Being in the purpose-built Woodland Court rather than the hotel’s more historic main house sees our door opening to a super high-quality, stylish modern-classic bedroom. It could be a Four Seasons showroom: huge, inviting bed clearly clad in top-notch freshly starched linens, resplendent marble ensuite bathroom, big desk with information folders, and a whopping widescreen with a hotel video of guests having a whale of a time in a hot tub.’ Read more of our anonymous review of Ellenborough Park.

Luxury boutique spa hotel Ellenborough Park in the CotswoldsYou say… ‘Wow, this hotel is absolutely brilliant. The service is professional, slick, warm and friendly – at odds with the formality of the building and a great asset to the management. We had dinner in the restaurant which has superb service and excellent food. Be careful with the wine menu; after a bottle of bubbly, those expensive vintage clarets are too affordable. Lol! Financial hangover next day. The heated outdoor swimming pool was a perfect start to Sunday. We had a ground-floor room in the woodlands with a private terrace onto the heated pool. Nice touch. Thank you for the free cocktail on arrival, Mr & Mrs Smith x.’ (James, Silversmith, stayed March 2012)
