One of the most anticipated launches of the year was the recent opening of Keith McNally’s Balthazar London in Covent Garden on the site of the Old Theatre Museum. They serve traditional bistro fare from their famous breakfasts through to late-night suppers; and, as with the New York original, there is an adjacent bakery.
Twice Michelin-starred chef Claude Bosi of Hibiscus restaurant has opened his second pub with his brother Cedric – the 18th-century Malt House, in Fulham. They first entered the pub scene by introducing the Fox & Grapes to Wimbledon, and they are now rustling up a similar formula of classic modern seasonal British pub food with a former head chef of Hibiscus at the helm.
Sushinho, the Brazilian-Japanese eatery showcasing the kind of delicious fare found in the sushi joints and churrascarias of Rio and Sao Paolo, has just opened their second London outpost in Devonshire Square in the City. Sushinho features a ground-floor restaurant with a 10-foot sushi bar and a lower ground-floor cocktail bar, the Cutler Bar (where you also get little bites such as delicious moqueca ceviche), as well as a private dining space.
Famed French chef Eric Chavot has made a welcome return to the London restaurant scene after a two year stint Stateside and has launched Brasserie Chavot in the Westbury Hotel. Comprising a 70-seat restaurant and a seafood counter showcasing Chavot’s signature style of contemporary and classic French cooking.
The St Vibes team (a new company from chef Isaac McHale and restaurateurs Daniel Willis and Johnny Smith, previously the Young Turks before the departure of James Lowe) are on the brink of opening the Clove Club as part of the Shoreditch Town Hall renovation. From next week it will feature a bar and restaurant with a seasonal British menu similar to their other hugely popular Spitalfields restaurant the Ten Bells.
