We were scowling a little as we considered where in the world we’d rather be today (Friday blues, dontcha know), and then it hit us: the Valley of the Kings in eye-bogglingly beautiful Bali. The very name sounds better than an Indiana Jones location and, luckily for us, we have a handsome hotel there. Of course we do. So, here’s introducing this week’s hotel candy: Viceroy Bali, as fine a place to spend a Friday as we can think of (though do let us know if you’ve had better).

Setting View-blessed Pentanu valley-top

Why this week? August is high season, with delicious temperatures to match. If the humidity doesn’t keep you by your infinity pool all day long (any excuse), visit the Pasar Seni – Ubud’s art market – or enjoy the multitude of walks, treks and tours that are available year-round. If (if) you needed further persuasion, here’s our Viceroy Bali offer: 25 per cent off and free dinner (until 19 December 2013).

The secrecy of the thatched-roofed private villas is enticing for couples (especially honeymooners) and, with the promise of the very best service attached, we can feel the relaxation stealing over us from the hotel’s world famous Lembah spa. Hide away from the demands of modern living, replace your laptop with a cocktail and, instead of being glued to your mobile, listen to the melodic trickle of water in the streams and plunge-pools. For less lazy moments, the hotel offers Balinese dancing, cookery lessons and private yoga classes.

Mr and Mrs Smith say ‘Back at base, Mrs Smith and I are joined in the bath by another woman – Saraswati, Hindu goddess of knowledge and music. As we sink back in the suds and soak up the soundtrack of water trickling down the walls, her four stone arms enfold us, each symbolising a purushartha (pillar of human life)…’ Read the rest of our Viceroy Bali review.

You say ‘I liked the privacy and character of the Deluxe Terrace Villas, the convenience of the Ubud shuttle and the stunning view from the restaurant (particularly the morning sun for breakfast).’ (Stephanie, BlackSmith, stayed 26 October 2012.) Read more Viceroy Bali reviews from our Guestbook.
