If the dog days are slowing you down, consider this roundup your pep talk. There’s still another adventure (or two… or three…) to be had this summer. Celebrate the piano in Provence, catch an award-winning flick in Melbourne, or toss tomatoes in Spain. Here’s what’s happening in August…
21 July – 19 August La Roque d’Anthéron International Piano Festival, Provence, France
Taking place just an hour from the stone-built sanctuary Hôtel Crillon le Brave, this festival pays tribute to tickling the ivories in more ways than one, including classical, contemporary, jazz and electro music.
3-20 August Melbourne International Film Festival, Melbourne, Australia
Hardcore Australian cinephiles will likely be drawn to Australia Day, but films such as Tokyo Idol, which takes a look at Japanese pop stars, and Faces Places, a French documentary by famed director Agnès Varda and photographer/muralist JR, will also screen at this movie extravaganza.
4-28 August Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Edinburgh, Scotland
Come August in Edinburgh, you can’t walk down the street without bumping into a performer. That’s because the Fringe, the world’s largest arts festival, hosts 3,500 shows across 300 venues. Count on theatre, dance, comedy, cabaret, opera, musicals and spoken word.
5 August – 12 November Matisse in the Studio, London, England
Here’s an open invitation to take a peek at Henri Matisse’s personal things. This exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts pairs the artist’s works with objects found in his studio. Kinda makes you reconsider the tchotchkes you have on your own desk.
10-12 August Way Out West Festival, Gothenburg, Sweden
Lana Del Rey, the xx and Major Lazer headline at Sweden’s three-day music festival.
10-13 August International Balloon Fiesta, Bristol, England
Stick it to drones by honouring the world’s original recreational flying wonder. Check out all the hot-air balloon action, then crash (sorry, probably not the best word in this context) at either the Bristol Harbour Hotel or Number Thirty Eight.
21 August Total Solar Eclipse, Across the US
A cosmic craze is sweeping the States due to the first total solar eclipse to stretch from coast to coast, visible only in the US, since 1776. Viewing parties are set for cities such as Charleston, South Carolina and Jackson Hole, Wyoming – two spots along the dramatically-dubbed ‘path of totality’.
26-28 August Notting Hill Carnival, London, England
Feathers, sequins and Caribbean beats flood the streets of West London for this annual street festival. Bunk at either the Portobello Hotel or The Laslett so you don’t have far to walk in your party plumage.
26 August – 15 January Yves Klein exhibition, Mexico City, Mexico
Latin America gets its first Yves Klein retrospective ever at the Museo Universitario de Arte Contemporáneo. Go and reignite your love for the colour blue.
28 August – 10 September US Open, New York, US
Will Roger Federer snag an astounding 20th Grand Slam title? Will Shania Twain sing ‘Man! I Fell Like a Woman!’ at the opening ceremony? We’ll find out, as the tennis world turns its eyes to the Big Apple.
30 August La Tomatina, Valencia, Spain
This summer marks the 15th anniversary of the release of that Las Ketchup song (you know the one). You may want to brush up on the lyrics and moves just in case you find yourself covered in tomatoes in eastern Spain.
